Biosecurity is about protecting our environment, food systems, and communities from harmful pests, diseases, and invasive species. It’s not just science–it’s about keeping the things you care about safe.In this section, you’ll discover:
- what biosecurity really means?
- how Australia stops threats from getting in?
- who’s involved (hint: it’s more than just scientists)?
- what you can do to make a difference?
Whether you’re into science, sustainability, tech, or global issues–biosecurity is connected to your future. Ready to be part of the solution?

What is biosecurity
“Biosecurity” might sound technical, but it’s actually simple: Bio means life (like people, animals, and plants) and security means protection. So, biosecurity is about protecting living things from harmful pests, diseases, and invasive species.
Australia is home to animals and plants that exist nowhere else on earth. But pests, diseases, and invasive weeds from other countries can:
- damage native wildlife and ecosystems
- wipe out crops and seafood farms
- spread illness to animals and people
- harm farmers, businesses, and the economy
Pests like fruit flies, termites, and feral animals cause damage to crops and property.
Diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi can infect plants, animals, and even us.
That’s why biosecurity is a big deal for agriculture, food safety, the environment, and our future.
Because Australia is home to unique plants and animals found nowhere else on earth, protecting our biodiversity is incredibly important, and we need biosecurity to help us do that. Plus, agriculture plays a huge role in our way of life, from the food we eat to the clothes we wear. Protecting our environment, whether it is nature reserves or farms, means protecting the industries and people who depend on it.
Biosecurity is a team effort and it’s happening around you every day. From farmers and scientists to travellers and students, everyone plays a role.
