About the course

This free short, self-directed online course has been created by the European Commission for the Control of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (EuFMD) to provide an overview of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), recognize or suspect the disease in the field, identify the correct samples to collect and the relevant control measures. 

This course has been developed by the EuFMD, to assist you in identifying the clinical signs of FMD in cattle. For specific information regarding FMD in Australia, please contact the agricultural department in your state or territory.

What you’ll learn

This e-learning course is intended for government veterinarians, private veterinarians, livestock industry members, farmers and veterinary students.  It provides information on the importance of emergency animal disease preparedness, an overview of foot-and-mouth disease including sampling and control measures.

Course content

After studying this module, you will be able to:

  • The importance of being prepared for emergencies and the early detection of FMD outbreaks.
  • Pathogenesis of FMD, clinical signs, routes of transmission and outbreak investigation.
  • Samples that should be collected to enable laboratory diagnosis of FMD.
  • Biosecurity principles to reduce the risk of transmission.
  • Control measures that would be applied in the event of an FMD outbreak.

The course is available for free through the EuFMD’s virtual learning platform (vLearning).
