About the course

This two-day face-to-face course provides beekeepers with the skills to recognise, monitor and manage the impact of pests and diseases on honey bee colonies. This course aligns with three units of competency from the Certificate III in Beekeeping AHC31818:

  • AHCBEK313 Manage pests and disease in a honey bee colony
  • AHCBIO303 Apply biosecurity measures AND
  • FBPOPR2066 Apply sampling procedures.

What you’ll learn

You will develop knowledge and skills in:

  • interpreting the Australian Honey Bee Biosecurity Code of Practice
  • applying biosecurity principles and practices to an apiary site and honey bee colonies
  • identifying and applying the compulsory monitoring and recording requirements of the Code of Practice.

This course is an approved bee pest and disease management course; completion of this course meets the biosecurity training obligations for beekeepers under the Australian Honey Bee Industry Code of Practice.

Course content

  • Identify the suitable PPE required and WHS risks
  • Assess the health and condition of brood
  • Assess the health and condition of adult bees
  • Identify the climatic factors that predispose honey bees to the various pests and diseases
  • Identify the appropriate samples to assist in the identification of the pest or disease
  • Identify the necessary actions to reduce the impact of pests and disease of honey bees
  • Industry development and adoption of the Bee Biosecurity Code of Practice.
