About the course

The Polyphagous shot-hole borer (PSHB) Awareness and Surveillance Online Training provides practical information to support awareness and early detection of PSHB.

Developed by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), this online course introduces the pest, outlines its spread and impacts, and supports participants to recognise host species, identify symptoms of infestation and understand reporting requirements.

By building awareness and surveillance capability, the course supports efforts to contain the spread of PSHB and strengthen community understanding of this biosecurity risk.

What you’ll learn

On completion of this course, you will:

  • understand what polyphagous shot-hole borer (PSHB) is and why it is a biosecurity concern
  • recognise host species and common symptoms of infestation
  • know where and how to look for signs of PSHB activity
  • understand quarantine area requirements and movement restrictions
  • learn how DPIRD is responding to PSHB detections
  • know how to report suspected PSHB activity.

Course content

Participants are introduced to PSHB and its detection in Australia, including where it came from and how it spreads. The course outlines host species, symptoms and surveillance approaches, along with quarantine area requirements, response activities and treatment options. A short quiz reinforces learning, and participants complete a declaration to receive a certificate of completion.
