About the course

This course contains an introductory overview module and 7 scenario-based modules presented in a problem-based format. The modules will take 30 mins to 1 hour to complete, and a completion certificate can be downloaded for each module as evidence of Continuing Professional Development. The entire course is estimated to take 6 hours to complete, and progress can be saved to resume later.

These training modules aim to provide veterinarians and veterinary students with case studies to practice detection, investigation, reporting and management of suspected emergency animal diseases.

The course has been created by the University of Melbourne in collaboration with the Australian government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF).

What you’ll learn

On the successful completion of this course, you will:

  • be reminded of your professional and legal obligations of a private practitioner to identify and report cases of suspected EADs to government authorities and be able to identify appropriate reporting mechanisms
  • understand key response strategies and intervention options in an EAD event
  • be aware of key roles for private veterinarians in the detection, investigation, reporting and response to EAD events
  • know where to source technical resources on EADs.

Course content

The Emergency Animal Disease Online Training Course is presented in case study format and includes the following modules:

  • Overview module (1 hour)
  • Case study 1: Goat Abortion (30 minutes)
  • Case study 2: Lethargic backyard chooks (1 hour)
  • Case study 3: Wobbly horse (1 hour)
  • Case study 4: Sudden death in pigs (30 minutes)
  • Case study 5: Dog with neurological signs (1 hour)
  • Case study 6: Skin lesions in cattle (1 hour)
  • Case study 7: Vesicular lesions in a feedlot (1 hour)

Enrolment

To access this training, you will need to log in to the platform, eadonline.com.au. Access is free and aimed toward veterinarians and veterinary science students, however, the modules are available to anyone with an interest in emergency animal diseases. If you are not already registered on the Emergency Animal Disease Online Training platform, then you will need to register and create a new account.
